  About Legends of West Africa

West Africa was controlled by Colonial rule until the mid-1900’s. For decades the French, Spanish, English and Portuguese exploited the region’s people and natural resources. During the many long years of European occupation the indigenous cultural traditions of West Africa were suppressed. However, centuries of tradition are hard to completely unravel, and the region’s culture was preserved in its music and dance. Many West African nations have formed national cultural programs to further aid the reclamation of heritage. The result has been the birth of many of West Africa’s most celebrated ensembles including Les Ballets Africains, Le Ballet National du Senegal, Farafina, Ballet Djoliba and Percussions de Guine’e.

In 2005 Legends of West Africa founders Mamoudou Conde and Laura Rich began discussing their shared desire to see the many talented West African artists living in the United States come together under the collective vision of sharing the musical heritage of West Africa with the world. Legends of West Africa is the manifestation of that vision. With the outstanding guidance of its directors the ensemble inspires, entertains, educates and preserves the rich and beautiful cultural traditions of the people of West Africa for future generations.
